Tips to help you financially prepare for life after divorce

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2018 | Estate Planning |

No one wants to go through a divorce, but you may come to find that this is the only way to change your life for the better.

While there is a lot to consider during the divorce process, you’ll want to keep close tabs on your finances. If you neglect to do so, you could find yourself in a difficult spot in the future.

Although no two people are in the exact same situation, there are tips everyone can follow to financially prepare for life after divorce. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Do what you think is best for yourself. While there is nothing wrong with taking outside advice, you know your situation and goals better than anyone else. You and you alone are in charge of your future, so make your own decisions.
  • Open separate accounts. Now that the divorce process is on the horizon, you need to understand the importance of ditching your joint accounts in exchange for those in your name only. Start by opening your own checking account, savings account and credit card.
  • Gather important documentation. This can include but is not limited to bank statements, retirement account statements, credit card statements, life insurance policies and pay stubs.
  • Create a budget for the future. It’s essential to understand that your life will not be the same down the road, so you need a budget to guide you. This should include all your expenses and income, so that you have a better idea of what you’ll face in the future.

Last, but certainly not least, there is help to be had when you need it. For example, you could meet with a tax professional to discuss the impact of divorce on your tax situation.

Even though you’ll have a lot to contend with during the divorce process, you don’t want to overlook the importance of sound financial preparation. Knowing what to expect is half the battle.
